Week 7 of the 2018 NFL season is in the books, and that means it’s time to look at Week 8 waiver wire pickups. Most leagues’ waivers process on Wednesday, so this article will be posted every Tuesday. The percentages next to a player’s name explain what percentage of an FAAB budget should go toward that player in a 12-team PPR format.
Quarterbacks
Baker Mayfield (CLE, 0-1%)
After topping 20 points in Cleveland’s Week 7 loss to Tampa Bay, Baker Mayfield now gets Pittsburgh and Kansas City in back-to-back weeks. Both the Steelers and the Chiefs are in the bottom six in the NFL in points allowed to opposing quarterbacks.

Running Backs
Jalen Richard (OAK, 12-14%)
Marshawn Lynch has been placed on Injured Reserve, meaning third-down back Jalen Richard could absorb some more between-the-tackles work. Richard has already established himself as Oakland’s pass-catching back, with 31 receptions on the young season. The Raiders have the NFL’s third-worst point differential on the season, so Oakland will likely be down on the scoreboard in most games, further bolstering Richard’s outlook. In PPR leagues. Richard is immediately startable as a flex candidate.
Doug Martin (OAK, 8-10%)
The other running back in Oakland is Doug Martin, whose career has been full of ups and downs thus far. Martin’s outlook is bleaker than Richard’s due because he will not catch many passes, a severe blow to his value because of predicted game script. Furthermore, the Raiders have one of the NFL’s worst offensive lines so far this season according to Pro Football Focus, so don’t overbid on the Muscle Hamster.
Wide Receivers
Randall Cobb (GB, 8-10%)
When Aaron Rodgers and Randall Cobb are both on the field, the duo has been lights out. Entering this season, Green Bay WR2s had placed in the top 24 wide receivers 75 percent of the time when Rodgers plays more than 10 games. Now healthy after a month-long absence, Cobb is a flex candidate right away.
Tre’Quan Smith (NO, 4-6%)
Tre’Quan Smith seems to have taken over the Ted Ginn role in New Orleans after the latter was placed on Injured Reserve earlier this month. Smith played 73 percent of snaps in New Orleans’ Week 7 game against the Ravens, almost tripling Cameron Meredith’s snap rate of 25 percent. Smith saw six targets too – not a game-breaking totla, but enough to be relevant, especially considering the quality of targets.
Geronimo Allison (GB, 4-6%)
The clear third wide receiver in Green Bay, Geronimo Allison may not see double digit targets week in and week out, but the quality of targets is high with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. Allison had 18 targets across the three games that Randall Cobb was healthy this season, so he is startable in a pinch assuming he is active on Sunday.
Tight Ends
Vance McDonald (PIT, 1-3%)
Vance McDonald saw eight targets in Week 6 against Cincinnati, and he probably wasn’t picked up in many leagues because of Pittsburgh’s Week 7 bye. As the starting tight end in a high-octane offense, McDonald has multiple-touchdown upside every week.
