Giants RB Saquon Barkley (knee) could be limited early in the season as the team ensures he’s fully healthy and capable of handling a larger workload throughout the year coming off major knee surgery.
Fantasy Impact: Barkley didn’t only tear his ACL early in the 2020 season, but he also had some Meniscus and MCL damage. His recovery is on schedule, but it’s being reported that the Giants are interested in playing the “long-game” when it comes to Barkley’s full recovery. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, “the idea is to bring Barkley along slowly to make sure he’s healthy for the duration of the 17-game season, and hopefully a postseason.” The Giants have brought in Devontae Booker, Ryquell Armstead, and Corey Clement as free agents this off-season. While they’re all unlikely to handle a large workload, it’s clear Barkley won’t handle 85% or more of the snaps early on in the season like he has in years’ past. This news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise coming off major knee surgery, but temper expectations for Barkley’s workload at least throughout the first few weeks of the season.
