Week 9 of the 2018 NFL season is in the books, and that means it’s time to look at fantasy football waiver wire pickups and free agent adds. The percentages next to a player’s name explain what percentage of an FAAB budget should go toward that player on a waiver claim in a 12-team PPR format.
Quarterbacks
Andy Dalton (CIN, 1-2%)
Cincinnati flies to New Orleans this weekend to play the game with the highest over-under on the main slate of games. The Saints defense has been absolutely horrendous against opposing quarterbacks this season, ranking 31st in the league in opposing fantasy points against. Andy Dalton is a QB1 this week.
Running Backs
Duke Johnson (CLE, 10-12%)
Hue Jackson’s firing paid immediate dividends for Duke Johnson, as the scatback saw a season-high nine targets on Sunday, turning that into 78 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Cleveland should be in negative game scripts a lot this season, which helps Johnson seeing as he is entrenched as the passing-down back for the Browns.
Wide Receivers
Marquez Valdes-Scantling (GB, 10-12%)
The Packers placed Geronimo Allison on Injured Reserve on Tuesday, meaning Marquez Valdes-Scantling is in line for more targets from one of the best quarterbacks in football. MVS has topped 100 yards in two of the last three games, seeing 17 targets combined during that period. The Mizzou product has a chance to eclipse Randall Cobb on the target totem pole in Green Bay, making him the top priority addition of the week.
John Ross (CIN, 4-6%)
A.J. Green is out indefinitely with a toe injury, so John Ross is now the No. 2 wideout in Cincinnati. The No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Ross has struggled with injuries thus far in his career, but he is arguably the fastest player in the league when healthy. Current reports are saying that Green is out for at least a couple of weeks, so put Ross on the flex radar in the meantime.
Adam Humphries (TB, 4-6%)
Adam Humphries exploded onto the scene in Week 9 with two touchdowns, but he’s been seeing consistent target numbers for a while now. Humphries has 27 targets in the last three weeks and seems to have established himself as a weapon in the Tampa Bay offense. Still, there is reason to be skeptical: DeSean Jackson and Chris Godwin are not going to disappear in the Buccaneers’ passing game. Still, Humphries’ target numbers warrant a speculative add.
Tight Ends
Jack Doyle (IND, 2-4%)
Jack Doyle’s injury led to Eric Ebron’s ascendance as a startable tight end option in Indianapolis, but Doyle was out-snapping and out-targeting Ebron before he got hurt. Now healthy, Doyle should once again become a useful option in the Colts passing attack. The lack of quality wideouts in Indianapolis means both Ebron and Doyle can remain fantasy-relevant. Don’t forget that Andrew Luck supported both Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener as fantasy-relevant options a few years ago.
