This week’s NASCAR fantasy picks for the Consumers Energy 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
It feels as though the Daytona 500 was only last week, but the regular season of NASCAR is winding down. There are only 4 races left before the NASCAR playoffs:
- August 11th at Michigan
- August 17th at Bristol
- September 1st at Darlington
- September 8th at Indianapolis AKA “The Brickyard”
The official playoff season begins on Sunday, September 15 in Las Vegas. Let’s hope those grasshoppers are gone by then!
Right now, a few drivers are likely getting nervous about their chances to get into the playoffs. Though drivers like Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, and Joey Logano have a solid foothold in the standings, other drivers like Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer are too close to the cutoff line for comfort. And if winless drivers like Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Ryan Newman, or Daniel Suarez find their way into victory lane in the next four races, they race their way in and someone near the bottom of the list will get bumped out of position.
With only four races left, you can expect things to get crazier on track. Stage points will become more precious than ever, and drivers will become more aggressive. Chances will be taken, people will get moved, and chaos is sure to ensue. Get ready for edge-of-your-seat racing, which is always fun for us spectators!

And now, here are this week’s Brilliant, Bold, and Bonkers NASCAR Fantasy picks for the Consumers Energy 400 at Michigan International Speedway
Brilliant NASCAR fantasy picks
Kurt Busch
- Wins: 3
- Top 5 finishes: 6
- Top 10 finishes: 13
Second place is the first loser, and that’s where Kurt ended up last time around this 2-mile track. This time, I don’t expect he’ll settle for that. The 1 team has a rough go since the last win in Kentucky, but I suspect this week will be much better for all involved.
Joey Logano
- Wins: 2
- Top 5 finishes: 5
- Top 10 finishes: 14
Logano has been fairly quiet in recent weeks, but this is a great track for him to make some noise. He won here last time out, and his record has been consistent. Look for the 22 at the finish line when the final lap closes out.
Kyle Larson
- Wins: 3
- Top 5 finishes: 4
- Top 10 finishes: 5
Larson has put on an impressive show in the last two weeks, with solid races that turned into solid finishes. Watkins Glen is far from his best track, but he still pulled off an 8th place finish. It seems as though the 42 is ready to break out, and with his record here at Michigan, it’s likely to happen this weekend.
Bold NASCAR fantasy picks
Chase Elliott
- Wins: 0
- Top 5 finishes: 3
- Top 10 finishes: 6
Last week, Chase Elliott absolutely ruled the MECNS. Two stage wins and a final victory was exactly what he needed to take him into this week. He may not have a win at Michigan, but it’s one of his best tracks overall. His average finish is 5th, and he’s never finished out of the top 10. It’s possible that the 9 repeats this week.
Kevin Harvick
- Wins: 2
- Top 5 finishes: 12
- Top 10 finishes: 17
Happy Harvick finally has something to smile about. His last three finishes have been solid, with one win included. Harvick’s last trip to Michigan gave him a 7th place finish, but he’s been solid here for a couple of years now. I have no reason to believe that he won’t get win number two this Sunday.
Paul Menard
- Wins: 0
- Top 5 finishes: 5
- Top 10 finishes: 7
Menard has a handful of tracks where he contends each time he gets behind the wheel. This is one of them. He’s finished well here in the past, and though this really is a bold pick, I think he’ll finish well again. Does he have what it takes to win? You never know what can happen; and that’s why he’s here.
Bonkers NASCAR fantasy picks
Alex Bowman
- Wins: 0
- Top 5 finishes: 0
- Top 10 finishes: 0
Bowman seems to have fallen off the map since his win at Chicagoland. He’s been outside of the top 10 in his last five races, and over half of those were closer to the 20’s. This hasn’t been a good place for the 88 in the past, and I don’t expect it that to change this week.
Clint Bowyer
- Wins: 1
- Top 5 finishes: 2
- Top 10 finishes: 12
Poor Clint has had a run of bad finishes. Since the all-star race, he’s cracked the top ten twice. That’s it. Last time here he finished 35th, and I doubt that his luck is going to change enough to propel him into victory lane.
Jimmie Johnson
- Wins: 1
- Top 5 finishes: 5
- Top 10 finishes: 13
Though he’s had a win here in the past, it’s not recent enough to warrant him the consideration of a win this week. Along with Watkins Glen, this is historically one of the 48’s worst tracks. While the future might look bright for Johnson’s collaboration with new crew chief Cliff Daniels, we’ll have to wait a bit to see him get back to a place where he shines.
