The general manager of the Carolina Panthers states they are taking the “short term” approach on Baker Mayfield. There have been no talks contract-wise beyond 2022 per, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Fantasy Impact: The Panthers were quick to pick up Sam Darnold’s fifth-year option last year, but it looks like they’re going to let the season play out before considering an extension for their recently acquired quarterback, Baker Mayfield. Even though there have been talks of a QB competition between Mayfield and Darnold, all signs point to this being Baker’s job to lose. The fourth-year quarterback battled a series of injuries in 2021 for the Browns including rib and foot injuries, in addition to a torn labrum, he played with nearly the entire season which most likely played a huge role in the career-low 3,010 passing yards he had while also throwing 13 interceptions. Baker and the Panthers are hoping to see improvement in his on-the-field play because that will be the determining factor in whether or not his stay in Carolina is extended or short-lived. Baker Mayfield is worth a roster spot in dynasty and Superflex leagues where he currently is the 29th ranked quarterback.
