Cam Newton and Mac Jones are presumably headed into a QB competition when training camp opens Wednesday. Ahead of that, Mike Florio reports: multiple current teammates believe Newton simply isn’t the guy he once was, according to a source.
Fantasy Impact: While it’s obvious Newton isn’t what he was during his MVP season in 2015, Florio adds: the presence of those thoughts lays the foundation for teammates to have an open mind about the possibility that Jones may be the better option. And the opinions of the other men in the locker room go a long way toward determining whether the decision by the coaching staff as to who will play quarterback will be accepted. Ultimately, according to Florio, the QB competition will come down to Newton – how much better he knows the offense, if he demonstrates better decision making, and if he can work smarter. Newton totaled a 65.8% completion percentage, 2, 657 yards, an 8:10 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and 7.2 yards per attempt last season. That said, he was sixth among all players in green zone carries, so he totaled 12 rushing touchdowns. The QB rushed for 592 yards as well.
