Deebo Samuel caught 2-of-8 targets for 14 yards in San Francisco’s Week 1 defeat to Chicago. He added eight carries for 52 yards and one touchdown, while losing a fumble.
Fantasy Impact: Samuel picked up where he left off in January, serving as a “wide back”, especially with Elijah Mitchell being forced out in the first half due to a knee injury. While Trey Lance rushed for a team-high 54 yards, Samuel trailed him by only 2 yards and was far more efficient on five less attempts. In addition, Jeff Wilson was largely ineffective filling in for Mitchell, as he was bottled up for 22 yards on nine carries. This contest occurred during a torrential downpour, making it difficult to truly evaluate the 49ers’ passing game, especially only after the first week of the season. However, they have a terrific opportunity next week at home for a rebound performance against the rebuilding Seahawks. If Mitchell is unable to make it back for Week 2, Samuel will have a path to additional touches, rendering him a rock-solid WR1.
