Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said on The Pat McAfee Show that veteran QB Gardner Minshew II could “play better early on” than rookie QB Anthony Richardson and that first-year head coach Shane Steichen will make the call when Richardson may supplant Minshew as the team’s starter.
Fantasy Impact: It is largely considered inevitable that early-first-round pick Richardson will be the Colts’ starter at some point, but Irsay implied that Minshew could be the team’s starter until Steichen feels like Richardson is ready. Minshew has played four seasons in the NFL, starting 24 games. He has a career TD-INT ratio of 44-15 and has shown the ability to play well when called on as a spot starter. Minshew can be drafted cheap in fantasy due to his expected limited shelf life and potentially poor offense, but he could be a late-round target in best-ball drafts due to his potential opportunity and talented weapons in Indy.
