The Bengals are looking to get running back Joe Mixon more usage this season, but don’t expect him to be the sole benefactor in the Cincinnati backfield. According to Ben Baby of ESPN.com, Mixon is expected to split third-down work with veteran Samaje Perine. When addressing Mixon’s usage, head coach Zac Taylor said, “Having Joe Mixon on the field makes us better. At the same time, you don’t need him on the field for 75 snaps a game.” It’s worth noting that offensive coordinator Brian Callahan was not hesitant to declare Mixon a three-down back when speaking to the media in late April.
Fantasy Impact: Mixon continues to be one of the most polarizing players in the fantasy football community. He has yet to live up to the hype of a top-12 running back, but many fantasy managers have not lost hope. The 26-year-old has a consensus ADP in the middle of the second round, though his exact draft position in individual leagues depends heavily on preference. He ranks 12th among running backs in the latest expert consensus draft rankings. Over four seasons, Mixon has appeared in 50 games, amassing 941 touches for 4,367 scrimmage yards, 25 touchdowns, and three fumbles lost. He was active for just six games in 2020 due to a foot injury.
