While speaking about 2nd year QB Kellen Mond earlier this week, Vikings’ new HC Kevin O’Connell said “Kellen’s having a good Spring so far, working incredibly hard, digesting the system.” O’Connell also stated that Mond has been able to instinctively make appropriate audibles pre-snap early in minicamp.
Fantasy Impact: Mond, who was a 3rd round pick for the Vikings in the 2021 NFL Draft, was a highly recruited dual-threat QB who can make throws outside of the pocket and under distress. Mond has been viewed as a developmental NFL QB who could potentially take over for Kirk Cousins once his rein as Vikings starting QB comes to an end. Mond fell out of favor in his rookie season under former Vikings’ HC Mike Zimmer as he and his coaching staff were under heavy scrutiny and weren’t afforded the opportunity to waste time on developing an unrefined QB prospect. So in 2021, Mond was inactive on most weeks while veteran Sean Mannion claimed backup duties behind Cousins. Mond seems to be making a good impression on the new coaching staff that should be provided a longer leash to help support Mond as a prospect. Kirk Cousins is still the clear number one QB in Minnesota, but Mond could be worth a flyer in deeper dynasty formats.
