Former Jets teammate OL Ryan Kalil said, “QB Sam Darnold is now in a system where he can grow and develop.”
Fantasy Impact: Kalil, who signed with the Jets in 2019, believes Darnold didn’t have freedom under former Jets’ HC Adam Gase. “It was a system that didn’t allow a lot of individual freedom. It was very, ‘You do it this way and that’s it,'” Kalil said. “A lot of the scheme was pre-determined (plays) based on what they thought they were seeing from the sideline. It didn’t give Sam a lot of room to grow, in my opinion, to make decisions on the fly. “It wasn’t a system that allowed him to evolve and make decisions on his own. I think that was the hardest thing.” Darnold was traded to the Panthers in exchange for draft picks during the offseason. The former No. 3 overall pick struggled in three seasons with the Jets, completing 59.8% of his passes along with a 45:39 TD: INT ratio across 38 games. Darnold will be given a fresh start in Carolina and is currently 26th among all quarterbacks in the latest expert consensus rankings.
