New York Jets RB Tevin Coleman is rumored to have an edge over the team’s other running backs heading into training camp, per Jets’ beat writer Rich Cimini.
Fantasy Impact: Coleman’s familiarity with the zone-running scheme that he prospered under during the 49ers’ Super Bowl run in 2019 has afforded him the opportunity to start the 2021 season as the Jets’ RB1. He also has the best straightaway speed according to NFL Next Gen Stats, a skillset that fits well within the horizontal and one-cut zone run-blocking scheme ran in New York. Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh, who was the DC in San Francisco during Coleman’s tenure, told reporters that “When he gets the ball in his hand and makes that one cut…it’s like he’s shot out of a cannon.” Coleman will be in a running back by committee (RBBC) system with rookie Michael Carter standing out as the other notable candidate to gain touches as the season progresses. Coleman is a great value if these rumors prove to be true, as his current ECR in half-PPR at RB54 allows him to be a late-round flier that could produce early and then be used in trade packages to gain even more assets in redraft leagues.
