After not throwing at all during the OTA and June minicamp portion of the offseason program due to an “elbow issue”, Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford was on the field and throwing during the team’s first training camp practice on Monday.
Fantasy Impact: The Rams indicated earlier this offseason that they would rest Stafford during the early portion of the team’s offseason program, so the fact that Stafford was spotted throwing again on Monday bodes well for his health status heading into the season. After the practice session, Stafford admitted that he still needed to knock some rust off after not throwing for a prolonged period, but that is to be suspected for any player after a lengthy absence. Stafford is positioned to lead a talented team again in 2022 as the Rams defend their Super Bowl title, but the offense has lost some key pieces from last year’s team. The offensive line has lost some talented veterans, Robert Woods was traded to the Titans, and Odell Beckham Jr. remains a free agent. However, the Rams did sign WR Allen Robinson in free agency and hope that he can return to his former Pro Bowl-caliber play after a down 2021 season and Stafford theoretically should take another step forward in regards to understanding and playing within HC Sean McVay’s offense as he enters year two with the team. Stafford is currently ranked as the QB11 according to FantasyPros ECR after finishing the 2021 season as the QB5. Without being a threat as a rusher, Stafford will need to maintain his high TD and passing yardage totals in 2022 to repeat as a top five QB.
