The following fantasy players to drop likely won’t do your fantasy football team any good for the rest of this season. Follow Garrett on Twitter @GarettThomas.
Fantasy football is nothing short of frustrating, especially if you are playing in multiple leagues and channels. But as a fan, Week 13 was something special to watch.
Of the nine games that started at noon, four of them ended as upsets! Then in the later games, we nearly had a second comeback win in Oakland after Tennessee secured their comeback against the Jets. Finally, we were left with Sunday evening’s game. If Week 13 needed to be summed up in one game, the Sunday Night Football game did that.
To recap Week 13 in depth, the Giants and Bears were incredible down in the Meadowlands. Tarik Cohen and Odell Beckham Jr. both threw for touchdowns; Beckham now has more touchdowns than Nathan Peterman this season.
THE Aaron Rodgers saw himself defeated by the Arizona Cardinals when Mason Crosby missed a field goal, as time expired. That loss was the final straw for head coach Mike McCarthy, as he was dismissed Sunday evening.
Zay Jones was probably the best value-play for daily fantasy this week, as he scored twice for the Bills. Staying in Miami, Josh Allen also saw Charles Clay drop a ball in the end zone for a game-winning touchdown, as time expired.
For Travis Kelce, he decided to put up jaw-dropping numbers. Maybe I am bitter because of DFS reasons, but Tyreek Hill and Patrick Mahomes missed on multiple deep balls, which would have allowed Hill to score. Ultimately, Travis Kelce killed everyone he played this week. If your team lost and you had Kelce, that is tough to imagine (screenshot that and send it to me on Twitter).
Another fantasy stud, Todd Gurley, almost disappointed all of his fantasy owners when he fell short of the goal line, instead of running in a touchdown – once again. Fantasy players were delighted to find Gurley in the end zone a few plays later.
Jason Myers also caused some devastation for playoff teams. The New York Jets’ kicker scored 19 fantasy points and surely gutted opposing teams. Allow me to float this idea to you, for next year: eliminate your kicker position – you will not be disappointed. I assume that you are pretty mad about losing your first fantasy playoff matchup at the hands of a kicker.
This week our cut list has some new faces, and some old. Here are the fantasy duds to remove from your team prior to Week 14.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling (WR, GB)
When Marquez Valdes-Scantling broke out originally, you saw him on the outside portion of the field for his routes. Then, former head coach Mike McCarthy moved Valdes-Scantling into the slot where he began to struggle. I am sure this was another reason, on a long list, to fire McCarthy.
Now, the offense as a whole has looked terrible, something you do not expect from Green Bay. The most surprising thing is that Aaron Rodgers is no longer an automatic start. Factor in the emergence of Aaron Jones and it makes for a Green Bay passing game that has little relevancy in the fantasy-realm. Valdes-Scantling has scored less than 10-fantasy points in the last three weeks. He and Randall Cobb are both drops this week.
Chris Thompson (RB, WAS)
What a frustrating year it has been for Chris Thompson. The Washington running back has always battled injuries and 2018 did not bring a better fortune for him. His injury concerns are just the beginning. Even when Thompson is healthy, it is because he is catching passes. Adrian Peterson handles the carries, anyway.
Then on Monday, we saw the ex-Texas quarterback Colt McCoy fracture his leg. Washington was then forced to bring the infamous Mark Sanchez onto the field – I always grin ear-to-ear when I hear his name and yes, it is because of that. With Sanchez handling the reins in Washington, the entire team will suffer. Drop Chris Thompson in your PPR leagues and if you still have Thompson in a standard league, I just feel sorry for you.
Wendall Smallwood (RB, PHI)
This one is pretty easy. Wendall Smallwood is at the back of the line for running backs in Philadelphia. In Week 12, he was relegated behind Corey Clement. During Smallwood’s Monday night match up this week, he did not log any touches. This can be attributed to Darren Sproles retaking Smallwood’s role. Cut Smallwood in all leagues.
Jordan Howard (RB, CHI)
Jordan Howard was listed on this column last week, and I stand here today ready to double down on that. If you watched Chicago battle New York, you saw Howard get 17 touches for 77 total yards. Mind you, he did virtually nothing with his touches, like most weeks. Howard even broke off his longest run of the year, finally getting a carry for 25 yards. What makes this comical is that if you take out his 25-yard run, his average goes down to 3.4 yards per carry for the game, which is his season average and a far cry from Howard’s 2017 numbers.
Once again, there is nothing to see here with this performance from Howard, as it was another loss for fantasy owners. The Chicago running back is solely dependent on touchdowns and Howard has not scored in the last four contests for the Bears — including the last two games, which did not feature their star quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. This was a make-or-break set of games for Howard and he failed to produce. On a positive note, Howard was much more involved in Week 13 than in week 12. However, 10 and maybe even 12-team leagues should look to drop Howard. I would look to pick up Justin Jackson, running back for the Los Angeles Chargers, if you are moving on from Howard.
Greg Olsen (TE, CAR) – Injury Reserved
The tight-end pool continues to be an ugly place for fantasy football. This week, Greg Olsen suffered a reinjury to his right foot, which sidelined him earlier this season. Olsen was placed on injury reserved as of Monday. Ian Thomas will be the next tight end on the depth chart. Thomas finished with five receptions for 46 receiving yards against Tampa Bay during their Week 13 contest.
Alex Collins (RB, BAL) – Injury Reserved
Alex Collins’ fantasy outlook had been bleak for quite some time. Prior to Week 13, Collins’ injury took an unfortunate turn and landed him on the injury reserved list. Gus Edwards will continue to see the bulk of the carries for the Ravens. However, deeper leagues may find value with Kenneth Dixon.
