Mike Girardi of NFL.com reports Patriots QB Mac Jones is impressing in camp and could challenge for Cam Newton’s starting role during training camp.
Fantasy Impact: Newton and the entire Patriots’ offense struggled last year. There was good reason for that. The former Panther was playing for a new team for the first time in his career and the team lacked talent. Neither will be true this year. Head coach Bill Belichick brought in Nelson Agholor, Kendrick Bourne, Hunter Henry, and Jonnu Smith to add some firepower on offense and Newton should have a better command of the offense. With his ability to score points on the ground, the former-MVP was an excellent QB2 target who presented with solid upside. Even if Newton wins the starting job, it seems like a possibility that Mac Jones will get a shot under center at some point. Fantasy managers will need to weigh the risk/reward of this on draft day. Jones could also see his dynasty start-up ADP rise with news he might be closer to the starting job than previously expected. Right now, fantasy managers should be approaching this situation with caution until more clarification is gathered.
