Bears head coach Matt Nagy is showering second-year receiver Darnell Mooney with praise after the team’s first week of padded practices: “Mooney right now is on fire with his route running. He’s running some routes right now that I really hadn’t seen him and [Allen Robinson] running those routes.” Mooney went on to say that he’s adding “more swag to it” and that Andy Dalton has helped him develop a bit more freedom in his abilities.
Fantasy Impact: Mooney showed some flashes as a rookie but was consistently missed downfield after winning routes, typically due to poor quarterback play. The hype train for Mooney started to gain steam early in the offseason and these reports from camp should pique the interest of fantasy managers. Whether it be Dalton or Justin Fields under center, improved quarterback play could really help this speedster receiver become fantasy-relevant. Mooney talked about how Dalton is helping him add more nuance to his routes by running off-speed and changing up his steps. While Robinson is fits to be the team’s alpha receiver once again, Mooney earned 98 targets as a rookie and could easily see that volume get a boost in Year 2.
