According to Diana Russini of ESPN, the New York Giants and RB Saquon Barkley are stuck in a stalemate regarding long-term contract discussions. The deadline is Monday, July 17, and Barkley is a threat to holdout to start the season.
Fantasy Impact: Barkley has made it clear to the Giants that he does not intend to play on the franchise tag, and Russini said that Barkley’s status for Week 1 is currently in question. Barkley totaled 1,650 yards on 352 touches in 2022, only missing one game en route to a Pro Bowl season. If Barkley and the Giants can not come to terms on a deal, the Giants will risk being without their most dynamic playmaker. Barkley is going on average as the half-PPR RB3, according to FantasyPros, and the risk of missed time is not baked into his costly draft value. If Barkley misses time, the Giants may turn to veteran RB Matt Breida and rookie Eric Gray.
