Players to Drop in Week 11: Is it time to cut Jared Goff, Robby Anderson and Sterling Shepard from fantasy rosters?
With the fantasy playoffs just around the corner, your roster decisions are as important as they will ever be. Determining who to cut versus who to save can be tough and each decision should be thoughtfully carried out.
Before dropping anyone, make sure to put your team into perspective. Just because your player is listed in this cut column, it does not automatically mean you should drop him, especially if you are in a dynasty league.
You also need to weigh your waiver-wire options. If someone tells you to drop a player, it does not necessarily mean the move is right for your team. For your team to improve, you have to be able to add a player that will make your team better, immediately or down the road, compared to the player to be cut. It is paramount to evaluate the players, and the transaction, prior to completing it.
Here are some names you should consider dropping going into Week 11.
Players to Drop in Week 11
Jared Goff (QB, LAR)
After their amazing 2018 campaign, the Los Angeles Rams have clearly taken a step back offensively. The reduction comes to the expense of fantasy owners everywhere, but this time we focus on Jared Goff.
Goff has been a very up and down fantasy asset to roster in 2019. Part of this up and down play can be explained. First, Todd Gurley is no longer what he used to be, for at least the present moment, which hurts because the Rams’ offense operates off of the running game. Next would be that their offensive line has been a nightmare for Sean McVay and company, which is another reason that the run game has been suspect.
Finally, and maybe because of the aforementioned reasons but, Goff has not taken the next step in development. In his last 16 games, Goff has completed less than 64-percent of his passes, is only averaging seven yards per attempt and has 30-plus turnovers compared to his 20 total touchdowns. I would not rush to let Goff onto waivers simply because he is still the quarterback for the Rams, but he is a week-to-week matchup play and can be dropped for more pertinent needs.
Robby Anderson (WR, NYJ)
The breakout of Robby Anderson looks like it will be put on hold. The first roadblock for his breakout was when his quarterback, Sam Darnold, went down with mono for multiple weeks. After several weeks of poor quarterback-play from the backups, Darnold was able to make his awaited return and Anderson had himself a day, scoring 25.5 PPR points against the Dallas Cowboys.
The next two weeks following their win against Dallas had Anderson facing New England, followed by a road trip to Jacksonville the following week. Most experts did not anticipate much from Anderson during these matchups, and that turned out to be correct since he finished with two PPR points and 8.3 PPR points, respectively.
Despite this, the breakout narrative was alive and well heading into his Week 9 contest against Miami but Anderson only finished with 5.3 PPR points. In week 10 he followed that performance up with a 2.1-point stinker against the Giants, which brings us to where we are today.
What we know is that the New York Jets cannot be trusted for any fantasy reason and Anderson is no different. His schedule still oozes with opportunity (@WSH, OAK, @CIN, MIA) but even if he performs it is going to be tough to trust him enough to start him. Anderson is not considered a must-cut but you can easily move on from him if you need to fill another roster need.
Jaylen Samuels (RB, PIT)
Jaylen Samuels is a valuable handcuff for fantasy rosters. Simply put, you know he is going to get a lot of volume if James Conner misses time and that narrative remained to be true after the previous two weeks. With Conner expected to play in Thursday Night Football, Samuels’ fantasy relevancy is going to depreciate quickly. If you roster Conner, it would be wise to hold onto Samuels solely for roster protection. If you do not roster James Conner, Samuels can be cut.
Sterling Shepard (WR, NYG)
Sterling Shepard has had a rough 2019 and unfortunately, it has led him onto this cut-list.
Early in the year, Shepard fell victim to a concussion and missed his Week 2 contest. After his one-game absence, Shepard got back onto the field and produced 29.1 PPR points in Week 3. The wideout looked to be producing a solid line of statistics before he fell victim to his second concussion of 2019.
Oddly enough, Shepard even passed concussion protocol heading into Week 9, only to be downgraded back into the protocol and missing that week, along with his Week 10 contest. All together Shepard has missed six games, five of which have been missed consecutively (and counting).
His injury history also does not take into account what Darius Slayton and Golden Tate are producing during Shepard’s absence. The production that Clayton and Tate have made by filling in for Shepard makes his role in the offense volatile for fantasy. I would look to cut Shepard at this point as he seems to be falling down the food-chain and the New York Giants are not the most reliable team for fantasy production.
