Fantasy Football Players to Drop in Week 6: Here are some names you should consider dropping from your fantasy team heading into the next slate of games.
All hail Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Chark Jr., Aaron Jones, and Will Fuller. We knew McCaffrey was a fantasy immortal, but Chark, Jones and Fuller’s performances were nothing short greatness, in a memorable fantasy week.
A lot of weird things happened in Week 5. The Oakland Raiders beat Chicago in London on the back of Josh Jacobs, who torched the Bears’ defense. We found out that the Patriots’ defense is human when they gave up a 60-yard touchdown run to the Redskins, which is only the second touchdown allowed by New England this season. We also now know that Gardner Minshew can, and will, be a fantasy-relevant streamer going forward and that he can support Chark’s fantasy value.
As for the more painful memories from Week 5, how about Mike Evans’ 0-point total for the day? Hopefully, you did not start him and Wayne Gallman, like I did.
Honestly, you are probably wanting to rage drop Mike Evans, and while I would say that is a step too far, I totally get it. Maybe instead, I can interest you in dropping one of the names listed below.
Before dropping anyone, make sure to put your team into perspective; just because your player is listed on this cut column, it does not automatically mean you should drop him, especially if you are in a dynasty league.
You also need to weigh your waiver wire options. If someone tells you to drop a player, it does not necessarily mean the move is right for your team. For your team to improve, you have to be able to add a player that will make your team better, immediately or down the road, compared to the player to be cut. It is paramount to evaluate the players, and the transaction, prior to completing it.
Here are some names you should consider dropping going into Week 6.
Players to Drop in Week 6
O.J. Howard (TE, TB)
O.J. Howard fantasy owners, do you want to talk about it? I sympathize with everyone stuck rostering this fantasy player because he was my fallback if Travis Kelce, Zach Ertz and George Kittle were taken off the board. While carrying a fifth-round ADP, Howard has stunned fantasy owners with the following stat lines: 4/32, 0/0, 3/66, 3/33 and 1/10 respectively, with no touchdowns.
After seeing those numbers, it is no wonder why Howard is going to be remembered as THE bust of 2019. It is not all Howard’s fault though, he is certainly an athlete on the field and one of the best athletes at his position but the Tampa Bay offensive scheme only marginally involves the TE position. Ironically, Cameron Brate, his teammate who’s ADP was 233 in standard leagues, is currently ranked right behind Howard in 2019 and has more touchdowns.
Now, I understand cutting Howard could be a painful thing to do, and if you are sitting on a 5-0 or 4-1 record you can probably continue to roster him on your bench. In deeper leagues, I would hold onto him just because of the chance of a breakout, which seems impossible now. Outside of those two scenarios, I would cut him from all 12-team redraft leagues and less.
Malcolm Brown (RB, LA)
One thing we have learned from the Rams following Week 1, Todd Gurley is still the only back to own for fantasy purposes; also, what a silly thing to question if this were one year ago. As for Malcolm Brown, he was a target in fantasy drafts as the handcuff to Todd Gurley, but after his 17.3 PPR points in Week 1, he became a must-add.
Brown’s Week 1 performance, at the time, seemed to confirm the Rams’ announcement – that they would limit Gurley’s workload and preserve his health rest-of-season. Understandably so, fantasy analysts took that information, saw how Brown performed, and concluded that Brown should be a must-add. Since that stellar start, Brown has carried the ball 15 times for 61 yards and only caught one pass for ten yards.
As for his snap count, Brown played roughly 28-percent of snaps from Weeks 1 – 4, but in Week 5 he saw his snap percentage fall to 4-percent. If you have Todd Gurley on your roster, Brown is great to have since he is the clear handcuff. Those not holding Brown as a handcuff can cut him from their roster.
James Washington (WR, PIT)
I think most people who added James Washington to their roster did it for several reasons. Firstly, his teammate Donte Moncrief struggled immensely early in the season. Moncrief struggled so much that the Steelers made him inactive for the last 2-of-3 games.
Then, starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went down for the season with an injury. Once that happened, backup quarterback Mason Rudolph was tasked with leading the offense and fantasy analysts remembered one thing: Rudolph’s pre-established rapport with James Washington at Oklahoma State University, where they were teammates.
That aforementioned rapport does not seem to be materializing, as Washington’s best fantasy performance was 8.2 PPR points in Week 5. In weeks prior, Washington only averaged 2.7 PPR points and even left a goose egg on the board for Week 4. It is also worth mentioning that Pittsburgh has made it known they want to get the ball in Juju Smith-Schuster’s hands, who easily is their best receiver.
Finally, Mason Rudolph left Week 5’s contest after a huge blow to the head and will likely be in concussion protocol leading up to Week 6, which makes him questionable to play Sunday. The Steelers could easily be rolling out their third-string quarterback in Week 6 – yikes – and luckily they have a BYE week in Week 7. There is a long list of reasons to cut Washington and I would do so this week, especially with his coming BYE week.
