Waiver Wire Week 9: Derek Carr is a solid streaming quarterback option this week, while Jaylen Samuels is in line for a heavy workload.
Week 8 is in the books as we cross into the second half of the fantasy season. Once again we saw several players have huge games and a few that disappointed as well. Either way, it’s always good to check out the waiver wire to see who’s available.
Week 9 waiver wire may not be the busiest one, but with four teams on bye (Falcons, Bengals, Rams, and Saints) you might be looking for a bye week fill in.
As always, we want to continue to pay attention to injuries as more news comes out for some players. Most of the players listed below are the ones who are most likely available on your waiver wire in your league. Every player listed is owned in less than 50 percent of leagues (Yahoo and ESPN formats) with a few who might have a little more ownership, but possibly available.
Week 9 Waiver Wire: Possibly owned, but worth a look
Jamaal Williams (RB, GB)
Jamaal Williams continues to play second fiddle to Aaron Jones, but with Aaron Rodgers playing like his old self again it appears to be a fairly valuable committee to own a part of. Williams finished Week 8 with 7 rushing attempts for 22 yards and a rushing touchdown while also adding in 3 receptions for 14 yards and a touchdown.
He won’t get the volume that Jones might and is more difficult to trust week to week, but Williams was given a red-zone look and with Green Bay continuing to put up points he is definitely worth an add if he is available.
Week 9 Waiver Wire: Less than 50% ownership
Ryan Tannehill (QB, TEN)
Ryan Tannehill had another good outing in Week 8 where he threw for 193 yards and 3 touchdowns against Tampa Bay. He’s got a tougher matchup in Week 9 with Carolina, but you could do a lot worse than Tannehill if you’re needing a bye week fill in.
Derek Carr (QB, OAK)
Derek Carr had a very decent outing in Week 8 as he threw for 285 yards and 3 touchdowns. He gets Detroit in Week 9, which means Oakland may have to put up some points to keep pace with Stafford. He’s a decent option to play in Week 9, especially if you are in need of a bye week fill in.
Jaylen Samuels (RB, PIT)
Jaylen Samuels was inactive in Week 8, but James Conner left the game with a shoulder injury. Samuels should be back come Week 9 and is line for a heavy workload should Conner’s injury lead to him missing time.
Mark Walton (RB, MIA)
With the news of Kenyan Drake going to Arizona, Mark Walton appears to be moving into lead back duties for the Dolphins. He out-touched Kalen Ballage 14-4 on Monday night, but only managed 54 yards. Once again it is the Dolphins and it won’t be fun owning/playing Walton, but anytime you can get a lead back it’s often worth the addition.
Raheem Mostert (RB, SF)
Raheem Mostert is a speculative add based on possible injuries to Matt Breida and Jeff Wilson. Especially if Breida were to miss time, Mostert may be in line for increased work. San Fransisco wants to run the ball and use multiple guys in doing so, which makes Mostert a good waiver wire pickup.
Cole Beasley (WR, BUF)
Cole Beasley found the end zone in Week 8 and added on 3 receptions for 41 yards. He’s not one whose going to explode all of a sudden, but he’s had at least 6 targets the last two weeks. He also gets a matchup in Week 9 with the Washington Redskins.
Alex Erickson (WR, CIN)
Alex Erickson had another strong outing in Week 9 as he had 5 receptions for 97 yards. He’s on bye this week, but if you have the space to hold onto him he brings some starting potential as a flex option. Once A.J. Green returns, Erickson may begin to lose value snaps as he most likely would fall behind Green, Tyler Boyd, and Auden Tate for playing time.
Danny Amendola (WR, DET)
Danny Amendola had another busy Sunday in Week 8 as he caught 8 receptions for 95 yards. He’s now had 19 targets in two weeks as Matthew Stafford and the Lions continue to look to throw the ball more. He’s the underneath option for Stafford, which brings some appeal, but he has the possibility to come back down to earth as he has Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones competing for targets as well.
Jonnu Smith (TE, TEN)
Jonnu Smith had a strong outing in week 8 and caught 6 receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown. In a rough tight end landscape, he is worth a shot, but you will need to keep an eye on the health of Delanie Walker. If Walker plays, Smith may fall into backup duties once again.
Darren Fells (TE, HOU)
Darren Fells now has 4 touchdowns in the last 4 games and in Week 8 caught 6 receptions for 58 yards. He’s got some boom/bust potential as it’s possible that he disappears at times as he has 4 games under 5 PPR points. Houston lost J.J. Watt for the season as well, which makes the defense a little less intimidating and may require the Houston offense to continue to put up as many points as possible.
Dallas Goedert (TE, PHI)
Another possible bye week fill in at tight end is Dallas Goedert. In Week 8 he managed 3 receptions for 22 yards and a receiving touchdown. Despite playing backup duties to Ertz, Goedert has now averaged 5.6 targets in the last three games. Philadelphia plays Chicago in Week 9, which their defense has been beatable, so you can look to Goedert for a bye week replacement if needed.
